North West Leicestershire District Council are to study CCTV pictures to try and find out who vandalised a tree in Coalville last week.

A photo was posted on social media by local councillor John Le Grys after spotting a young tree in Memorial Square that had been ripped out or sawn off, leaving just the lower trunk standing.

Paul Sanders, Head of Community Services at NWLDC, said: "Sadly this appears to be a mindless act of vandalism by someone with no regard for the local community.

"We will be reviewing CCTV footage to see if we can identify who was responsible and if anyone has information they should contact us at the district council.

"We'll also look to plant a replacement tree as soon as possible."

Cllr Le Grys, who represents Coalville West Ward, said on social media: "Memorial Square Coalville. Yet another sad act of vandalism.

"NWLDC are on the case - and I am hoping the tree can be replaced ASAP."
