Coalville CAN has received a £250,000 Government grant which secures the future of its Memorial Square offices.

The popular community group describes it as 'an extraordinary Christmas present' and a 'landmark decision' which means that the iconic building at the clock tower will 'now belong to the community forever'.

The money has come from the Community Ownership Fund, and means the building will be debt-free.

CAN says it removes the burden of loans and frees up opportunities for the people of Coalville to make use of the space for the projects they care about.

The decision had been due in May and would have been a key part of CAN's community share offer - however, it was delayed by the General Election.

CAN completed a deal to buy the building in December, but that included taking out a loan and a donation from world music star Brian Eno.

The letter informing CAN - Community and Neighbours - of the decision from Government Minister Alex Norris said: "I want to thank you for working to save your asset for generations to come.

"As you know, community ownership provides an invaluable platform to bring communities together, putting people back in control of local assets that are important to them.

"Community ownership has an essential role to play, not only in empowering communities, but also driving social and economic change"

CAN spokesperson, Deana Bamford added: "This investment is due to our commitment to giving a voice and say to people locally.

"By securing the HQ for community ownership, we are ensuring a legacy of independence, creativity, and opportunity for generations to come.

"There is a lot of negativity and lots of projects don't seem to be about putting the community first - Coalville CAN puts people first as they are our owners, we are run democratically, and this will be our space."

The building, already a cherished community space will continue to be a hub of activity, providing opportunities for community events, local enterprises, and grassroots initiatives.

Nicki Worthington, Chair of CAN said: "All the money we make will now be able to be spent locally, making a difference in our community.

"Raising the money was a lot of hard work with ups and downs. Our message is, while others may say Coalville can't, we say Coalville CAN."

Amanda Hack, MP for North West Leicestershire, added: "I am thrilled that Coalville CAN has successfully secured backing from the Community Ownership Fund to help secure the future of their headquarters, located in the heart of the town.

"This is a vital community asset that people cherish. Coalville CAN offers a wide variety of events and services throughout the year, including hosting the newly established Coalville Public Radio studio.

"As a Government, we are passionate about revitalising pride in our communities by empowering organisations, like Coalville CAN, to take charge of their local spaces.

"I'm excited to witness the expansion of these powers as we honour our commitment to enhancing the 'Right to Buy' provision, driving positive change together, right here in North West Leicestershire."
