An indoor market in Coalville is celebrating its first birthday with a host of free activities and giveaways to thank customers for their support.

To mark a successful first year of trading at Newmarket in Marlborough Square, shoppers and residents are invited to enjoy free entertainment, free food samples, and to win prizes on Friday 9 and Saturday, 10 September.

North West Leicestershire District Council (NWLDC) first opened the doors last September - and Newmarket has since been home to over 70 traders.

Over the last 12 months, the venue has also seen more than 19,000 visitors and hosted 22 events, with many of these now firm fixtures on the venue's calendar.

The celebrations will kick off with a cake cutting to mark the milestone, with customers receiving a free piece on a first-come-first-served basis.

Customers will be able to take part in a free prize draw where they could win money off vouchers for food traders, and free family tickets to Conkers.

Traders will also offer free food samples across the two days.

As part of the creative kids club, which runs every Saturday at the market, children can decorate their own birthday cookie on Saturday 10 September.

Cllr Andrew Woodman, NWLDC Portfolio Holder for Community Services said: "We'd like to say a big thank you to all our customers and traders who have supported Newmarket's first year.

"Over the last 12 months, Newmarket has become exactly what we wanted, a place where people can shop, eat, drink and meet friends and family. It's exceeded our expectations too, particularly with the event side of things, which has been really well received.

"We'll have lots going on to celebrate Newmarket's first anniversary, so come down on Friday 9 or Saturday 10 September and join in the free activities that we've got going on."
