Community radio station Hermitage FM has announced it is to close at the end of March.

In a statement on the station's website, it says the decision is 'unavoidable', with the Community Coffee Lounge in Memorial Square also closing.

Hermitage FM was launched in 2009 in Hotel Street, Coalville and moved to Memorial Square five years later.

As well as providing free training in broadcasting and radio production, Hermitage is the only Community Radio Station in the UK to operate a social enterprise Coffee Lounge, providing volunteering, work experience and training opportunities for adults and young people - many of whom have learning difficulties, disabilities or mental health issues.

The statement explains the reasons for the closure. It reads: "We, Jon and Jan Sketchley, have worked tirelessly for almost 17 years to bring a local radio service to North West Leicestershire on Hermitage FM, as well as a regional service – along with the NHS and Leicestershire County Council – on CWR since 2018.

"Regrettably, due to Jon's prolonged illness, closure is now unavoidable. Our Community Coffee Lounge in Memorial Square, Coalville, will also close.

"Throughout the years we have come to know hundreds, if not thousands, of listeners and customers who have supported our not-for-profit organisation. You can find out more about the history of the project in this short video.

"We would like to thank everyone who we have met along the way, as well as the many supporters who have helped to make the project possible and sustainable.

"Over the years we have raised funds for many good causes, supported hundreds of town events and helped many people find their careers in both broadcasting and hospitality.

"Our Community Coffee Lounge has provided a friendly place in the heart of Coalville for people to relax, socialise and enjoy good food.

"Our music and entertainment have been welcomed and enjoyed by so many people and we will sorely miss you - our customers and listeners."

Coalville councillor Michael Wyatt paid tribute to the efforts of Jon and Jan at Tuesday's North West Leicestershire District Council meeting.

He said: Cllr Michael Wyatt, Deputy Leader of the Council said, "It's with deep sadness that we learn that the Hermitage Radio station, along with the Hermitage Cafe, will be closing after nearly two decades.

"Jon and Jan Sketchley, have worked tirelessly for almost 17 years to bring a local radio station to North West Leicestershire, and a thriving community cafe which was always a joy to go into.

"Jon and Jan's commitment and selflessness are extremely rare and can only be commended,

"Coalville will miss Jon and Jan, who have shared their passion and their drive to bring people together from all sections of our community.

"I'm sure everyone in this room would like to join with me in sending John and Jan our thanks and best wishes to two of the most dedicated, hard-working and community-spirited individuals."
