Coalville's Remembrance Day parade will not take place this year due to the coronavirus pandemic.

But the public are being urged to Remember at Home on Remembrance Sunday, paying tribute to the sacrifices of our Armed Forces while also keeping safe from Covid-19.

The decision was not unexpected but North West Leicestershire District Council confirmed it this morning (Tuesday).

A statement from the council said: "The difficult but sensible decision to cancel Remembrance Sunday parades and services in both Coalville and Ashby de la Zouch has been taken jointly by North West Leicestershire District Council, Ashby Town Council and the Royal British Legion.

"All agreed that while remembering the fallen and their sacrifice is important as ever this Remembrance Sunday, preventing the spread of Covid-19 and ultimately saving lives must take priority.

"The public are being encouraged to remember and commemorate safely from their homes, taking part in the two-minute silence, displaying poppies in windows and tuning into televised services."

Councillor Virge Richichi, Chairman of North West Leicestershire District Council, said: "Remembrance Sunday is a chance to reflect and remember those we have lost, and to show our gratitude to those that are serving in conflicts around the world.

"The health and safety of our residents is our top priority and we know people in North West Leicestershire will understand the importance of remembering from home this year, reducing the spread of Covid-19 and saving lives."

Councillor John Coxon, Leader of Ashby de la Zouch Town Council, said: "In conjunction with our partners in the Royal British Legion, the church and local community groups, we have reviewed our arrangements with respect to Remembrance Day and Armistice Day for Ashby de la Zouch.

"In light of recent events surrounding the spread of Covid-19, we must ensure that public safety remains our priority.

"Whilst it is deeply regrettable having to cancel our annual parade and wreath-laying ceremony, in these uncertain times, we feel this is the right and only course of action to take.

"We wish you all well, please stay safe."

The Ashby and Whitwick branches of the Royal British Legion jointly said: "We are in full support of the remembrance parades not taking place this year, the safety of the public is a priority.

"This does not mean that you should not take the time to remember safely at home. You can pay your respects and show your support by joining in at the 11am two minute silence and by displaying a poppy in your window, garden or even by supporting the poppy appeal this year.
