Coalville woman gets go-ahead for log cabin barber shop

By Graham Hill 11th Feb 2021

A Coalville woman has been given planning permission to turn a log cabin in her garden into a barber shop.

The application was made last month and North West Leicestershire District Council has agreed to it.

Lisa Verdiani wants to set up the shop at home in Heron Way.

A planning report says: "The proposal is minor in scale, intended for use by one employee (the applicant) and one customer at any one time.

"Given the personal connection to the site, it is not considered that the applicant would be undertaking significant additional vehicular movements.

"Further, in the interests of sustainability and vehicular trips, these would be no more, than existing trips made to any salon, and it is considered a reducing in trips, in comparison to a mobile hairdresser.

"Given the scale and personal nature of the proposal, it is therefore considered to be acceptable, in this case."

The report adds that the proposed business use is not intended to take place from the dwelling itself, but from an existing log cabin which is sited in the rear garden.

It says: "The application site is adjoined by neighbouring dwellings to the rear and both sides.

"In respect of comings and goings, given the only employee would be the occupier of the application

dwelling and visitors are invited to the premises by appointment only, and with one visitor at any

one time, it is not considered that the level of comings and goings to the site would be significant

nor would have any detrimental impacts upon the occupiers of adjoining premises."

During the course of the application, the report says the Council's Environmental Health Team queried potential noises as a result of the use.

"In response the applicant confirmed: 'I do have a doorbell that is connected to my mobile phone but clients will be by appointment only so I know when I will expect someone & one at a time, I will reduce the sound on my phone to low, I'd have a radio also on a low volume, as I like to talk to my clients so it's less than normal

conversation sound level, the only other noise would be are my clippers & hairdryer and this also is of

normal conversation.

"All the activity will be inside the cabin which is of solid, insulated construction, not just a garden shed so it will reduce any sound outside."
