The waste site at Coalville has been closed due to a fire which broke out in one of the general waste compactor units at around 3pm yesterday (Sunday 16).

The site was evacuated and the fire service attended to extinguish the fire and make the site safe.

The fire has resulted in a loss of power to the other compactors, which is why the site has remained closed.

The damaged compactor is undergoing assessment, and work is also underway to restore power to the rest of the compactors.

Staff redicted residents to nearby waste site at Lount near Ashby.

A spokesperson for Leicestershire County Council told Coalville Nub News: "We expect to reopen the site tomorrow (Tuesday), but not all of the compactors may be working.

"So we are asking residents to bear with us if they are planning to visit the site tomorrow and Wednesday.

|The cause of the fire is not yet known, but we would like to remind people to take care over what is disposed of at the waste sites, as discarded lithium batteries and items which contain them, such as laptops, can cause a fire if they are not disposed of properly."

More information on disposing of waste safely can be found HERE.
