Coalville Road Closure: Network Rail Apologises To Local Businesses And Public For Disruption

By Graham Hill 10th Aug 2020

Network Rail has apologised to residents and businesses in Coalville for works which blocked Hotel Street at the level crossing over the weekend.

But they have contacted Coalville Nub News to say the road was opened again for traffic at 11pm on Sunday night which meant the area was accessible again on Monday.

The main road through the town had been completely blocked which caused concern among some local businesses that trade will be harmed.

The was postponed from April due to the Coronavirus lockdown.

There were also added complications due to abandoned water main.

But Network Rail said the work was completed ahead of schedule.

Clare Love, Programme Manager for Network Rail said: "We're really sorry for the disruption that local people and businesses in Coalville have faced while work was carried out to replace safety equipment at Coalville level crossing.

"In order to carry the work out safely we had an agreed road closure in place on Hotel Street from 15:00 on Wednesday, 5 until 06:00 on Monday, 10 August.

"Signs were placed on the road in advance to let people know and access for pedestrians was being maintained over the crossing.

"Unfortunately work on concrete foundations at the level crossing damaged services beneath the road, which meant the crossing had to be closed to pedestrians from the early hours of Friday morning until around 09:30 on Saturday morning, to keep members of the public safe whist repairs were carried out.

"Our teams were acutely aware of the disruption caused by this work and managed to re-open the road for motorists at 23:00 yesterday (Sunday, 9 August)."
