A Coalville man was jailed for 10 months after an incident which saw him twice try to ram police cars.

Swadlincote's Safer Neighbourhood Team reported that Michael Williams, aged 29, of Ash Grove, Coalville, pleaded guilty and was sentenced to 10 months in prison, banned from driving for 40 months, required to complete an extended driving test and ordered to pay all costs.

He had only been disqualified from driving 10 days' earlier and handed a suspended sentence.

The latest arrest happened in Shardlow, South Derbyshire, after failing to stop for Leicestershire Police and trying to ram their patrol car during a pursuit.

The driver, in a recovery truck with a car on the back, later tried to 'reverse ram' a police car after crossing into Derbyshire.

The SNT gave full details on its Facebook page following the court appearance last month.

They said: "SNT on patrol are notified by our in-car ANPR about a Ford transit recovery truck entering South Derbyshire, having previously failed to stop for Leicestershire Police and trying to ram their patrol car during a pursuit.

"The vehicle fails to stop and is pursued by PC Boniface, driving dangerously whilst laden with a Vauxhall Corsa on the rear.

"On several occasions, the driver stops in the road in an attempt to reverse ram us.

"Failing at this, the vehicle continued into Shardlow and down Wilne Lane to a dead end, where the driver fled across fields and into woodlands whilst being pursued on foot.

"The driver is lost near the River Derwent, but is tracked to an address with some great teamwork, which PCs Harvey and Boniface force entry to following the driver refusing to open the door.

"Checks revealed the driver had only been disqualified by the courts 10 days prior and given a suspended sentence."

Police said the driver was arrested for failing to stop for police, dangerous driving, driving whilst disqualified and wanted for failing to appear.

The SNT added: "Officers remained on duty to secure a charge and remand the driver into custody for the weekend and to the next available court.

"Our team would like to thank the public for their support, with some of the local residents entering the fields to locate and make sure we were safe and well whilst joining in the search for Williams."
