Coalville musician releases Christmas song inspired by becoming a dad for the first time - and written during lockdown
A Coalville musician has released a Christmas song inspired by the birth of his first child during lockdown.
Dom Beck decided to write the song while he was furloughed from his job with a national cinema chain 18 months ago.
'This Time of Year' is based on a child's first Christmas - and it is not a conventional song as it also addresses some of the topical issues that have dominated the headlines.
The song is written about, and for, his son Ethan.
Dom told Coalville Nub News: "I'd played in bands and open mic, things like that, but I carried on with the day-to-day job at the same time.
"Last year though, I'd been furloughed, and I wondered what would be a good way to pass the time, so I picked up the guitar.
"I started writing and recording things, a lot of it I did it on an app on my phone.
"I wrote the Christmas song last year, but we also had a baby born during lockdown in June as well.
"The song was kind of inspired by his first Christmas, that's what was behind it. What it would be like to experience your first Christmas.
"It was during a pandemic and there be certain things you couldn't do because of Covid rules. I mentioned a few topical things in and around that.
"One of the lines relates to John Lennon's song War is Over, and there are references to racism as well."
Dom counts artists such as Jeff Buckley and Damien Rice among his influences - but adds he grew up listening to The Beatles and Eric Clapton.
He has a other songs to his name and has showcased some of them on You Tube.
Dom added: "I did another song as well about the impending birth, which is called Sunlight in the Storm.
"Becoming a father has become an inspirational thing as well."
