Coalville MP Andrew Bridgen says that the 'dragonslayer' has gone following this week's sacking of Dominic Cummings.

And he confirmed he has been assured the departure of the Prime Minister's chief adviser will not stop Brexit going through at the end of this year.

Mr Bridgen says the Government is moving into a 'different phase' now.

Cummings left his post on Friday amid a power struggle in No10 Downing Street - and the Conservative MP for North West Leicestershire gave his view of events to LBC.

Mr Bridgen said: "He's a dragonslayer and the dragon's dead.

"We don't need a dragonslayer.

'He's potentially quite a prickly person, he's not someone who makes relationships with people.

"I think we're moving into a different phase of Government now, the Brexit endgame's set and we're leaving on December 31, the end of the transition period.

"That's set in stone, nothing's going to change that.

"I've been in contact with No10 following Dominic Cummings' departure and I've been assured there will be no backsliding on Brexit.

"I'm perfectly comfortable with that."

Mr Bridgen also appealed for unity across the UK once Brexit comes into effect.

He added: "We need the country, even the most ardent Remoaners, have got to realise we have to come back together and move forward.

"And face the clear challenges this country has now which is getting over the Covid crisis and sorting out the recession, and building those international trade deals around the world.

"That's a different team and a different message."
