Mount St Bernard Abbey was struck by lightning in the early hours of the morning last Sunday.

The bolt took out the phone lines and internet - which was being repaired this week.

The Abbey monks made the announcement on their Facebook page.

Their post read: "Announcement. We were struck by lightning early on Sunday morning and our phone system and internet connection were damaged.

"We are hoping to have them repaired in a few days. God bless."

Mount St. Bernard Abbey, on Oaks Road, is the only Cistercian (Trappist) Abbey of Monks in England, and it is the first mitred abbey since the reformation.

It was founded in 1835 and was the subject of a TV documentary earlier this year.

Here is how Coalville Nub News reviewed that programme last March Beer and Prayers - how Coalville monks have adapted to 21st century life.

The storms had earlier caused extensive damage to a house in Ashby Road, Coalville, Firefighters battle overnight blaze as Coalville house is hit by lightening bolt.
