Coalville town centre has been given a splash of colour this summer.

That is thanks to sponsorship of this year's Coalville in Bloom displays.

North West Leicestershire District Council (NWLDC) has installed 10 towering displays and 13 hanging baskets across the town with the financial support of Jelson Homes.

The Leicestershire housing developer provided £5,000 of sponsorship to brighten up the town centre through Coalville's annual floral displays.

Starting from Memorial Square, the flowers travel along High Street, Ashby Road and Hotel Street and are filled with geranium, begonia, lysimachia and ivy leaf.

The plants should last until late summer.

Councillor Michael Wyatt, Portfolio Holder for Community Services at NWLDC, said: "Coalville in Bloom has been running for several years and with the sponsorship from Jelson we have managed to deliver it again this year which makes a real difference to the town.

"I would like to thank Jelson for their support in allowing us to deliver Coalville in Bloom this year, which was touch and go due to budgetary constraints.

"Moving forward I will be seeking other sponsorship in the future, so we can work with businesses and organisations across Coalville and beyond to help brighten up our town."

Rob Thorley, Land and Planning Director at Jelson added: "As a locally based housebuilder, Jelson is proud to support a project that will bring such a wonderful array of colour to the town and the local community."

However, Coalville's Labour councillors pointed out earlier this week that the flower beds will be largely bare once the summer is over - and that Coalville in Bloom is developer-funded.
