A Coalville community figure has highlighted the 'remarkable role' played by Sikh regiments throughout history.

Kirat Sandhu marked Remembrance Sunday and Armistice Day - with services throughout the Coalville area.

He said: "As the sun sets on the 106th Remembrance Day, we pause to reflect on the bravery and sacrifice of all those who gave their lives in service to our country.

"In Coalville, like across the nation, we remember the soldiers who fought in wars, battles, and conflicts, ensuring our freedom and way of life.

"While we honour the many regiments and battalions that have contributed to the defence of our nation, I'm reminded of the remarkable role played by Sikh regiments throughout history.

"The Sikh community has a long and proud tradition of military service, with Sikh soldiers fighting in both World Wars and beyond. The bravery of the 14th Sikh Regiment at the Battle of Neuve Chapelle in 1915, the efforts of the 1st and 2nd Sikh Regiments in the battlefields of France, and the sacrifices of the Sikh Light Infantry in post-war conflicts, stand as a testament to their courage and resilience.

"Over 80,000 soldiers from the Indian subcontinent, many of whom were Sikh, lost their lives fighting for our freedom. Their sacrifice is a cornerstone of our shared history, shaping the world we live in today, and their contribution is a key element of the stories we honour on this day.

"As we pay our respects to the fallen, we must never forget that the freedoms we enjoy today were bought with the blood and bravery of those who fought for us, including those who travelled from distant lands to fight alongside us.

"Thank you to all the soldiers, past and present, for everything you've given. Your courage allows us to live our lives in peace, and for that, we are forever grateful. Let us all take a moment every day, to remember and honour their sacrifice. Lest we forget."
