Coalville's Christmas lights will now be switched on earlier than expected.

The town centre was due to be lit up for the festive season on Saturday.

But the lights will now be on from this 4pm this Thursday (Nov 26).

A social media post from North West Leicestershire District Council explained why.

It reads: "Thanks to some speedy work from our contractors, we're now able to switch the Christmas lights on in Coalville from 4pm on Thursday 26 November."

We reported last week about the council's plans to bring Christmas lights to Coalville but without any official fanfare so as to avoid crowds gathering during the coronavirus lockdown.

There will be Christmas lights in Coalville but no official 'switch-on'

Paul Sanders, Head of Community Services at North West Leicestershire District Council, said at the time: "There will be no event for the Christmas lights switch on in Coalville this year, but decorative lights will still be installed in the town centre."
