The Belvoir Centre Christmas tree in Coalville has been newly decorated - after 'urgent steps' were taken following criticism that it was too bare, and lacking festive sparkle.

One national newspaper reported locals as saying the tree was 'embarrassing' and made the town look like Scrooges.

The tree did not have any lights or decorations - and the model of Santa Claus next to it was described as the only hint of Christmas spirit.

But the Belvoir Centre owners Gylo have now moved to correct the situation - and now the tree's lights are shining brightly.

A spokesperson for Gylo told Coalville Nub News: "After we became aware of issues with the Christmas tree in the shopping centre, we've taken urgent steps to ensure that is suitably decorated.

"Unfortunately, we experienced some issues outside of our control this year and we're sorry that the tree was not up to the usual festive standards.

"We'd like to wish all visitors, customers and those that work in the Belvoir Centre a very Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year."
