Baking Business Brings A Taste Of Wales To Coalville During Lockdown

A Coalville baking business with its roots in Wales is going from strength to strength during lockdown.

Eleri's Welsh Cakes is a small family business with customers in Europe and across the Atlantic.

The company was the brainchild of Jess Lippett who is now producing 200 cakes a week.

And she told Coalville Nub News how the business began.

She said: "We originally moved to Leicestershire from Penarth - just outside Cardiff - around four years ago, and in 2017 had a little girl called Eleri, a traditional welsh name based on the Eleri river in Wales).

"We wanted to introduce her to a little taste of home but were pretty disappointed by the very limited offering at the local supermarket.

"So we took to the hot plate to make our own.

"After we handed the leftovers to colleagues and friends we realised there was a demand in the East Midlands for home made Welsh cakes."

Jess says she has not looked back since.

She added: "Our business has gone from strength to strength, and we regularly attend markets and food festivals.

"But our biggest market is the postal orders with business booming throughout lockdown with people wanting to send a socially distanced 'cwtch' - a welsh cuddle! - to loved ones or even grab themselves a little taste of Wales whilst they're unable to visit.

"We are now regularly baking over 200 cakes a week with some being sent as far as Canada and the Netherlands!

"We were recently chuffed to win a star in the great taste awards for our raisin Welshcakes.

"We've met some lovely people and heard some wonderful stories of people's holidays in Wales and memories of their grandparents making Welsh cakes on the bake stone through our business.

"We make and sell homemade Welsh cakes in a variety of traditional and contemporary flavours - we are fully insured and registered with environmental health (with a rating of 5)."
