Traders looking to move into Coalville's new Newmarket are being invited to submit their applications.

The development will see the former Litten Tree pub in Marlborough Square transformed into a modern space with food stalls and an eating area - as well as traditional market stalls, pop-up traders and space for events.

North West Leicestershire District Council, which owns the current indoor market in Coalville, is carrying out the transformation work and hopes to attract a variety of food and non-food businesses on a range of lease options.

The vision for Newmarket is for a modern shopping and eating experience which provides an exciting customer experience to both locals and visitors to the town.

The district council is particularly keen to receive applications for its catering areas which might include street food vendors such as Asian, Indian and other cultural cuisine along with vegan, vegetarian or gluten-free food alternatives.

Applications are also welcome from:

  • Fresh and local produce
  • Unique, fine and unusual products
  • Recycled and Fairtrade products
  • Delicatessen, bakery or cheesemonger specialists.

Newmarket is expected to be completed this Spring with the official opening taking place at a point when Covid-19 guidelines allow.

Councillor Andrew Woodman, Portfolio Holder for Community Services at NWLDC, said: "The completion of Newmarket is getting closer and we're excited to be inviting applications for traders that share our vision for this vibrant space.

"We're looking for both food and non-food traders that want to offer high quality products, bring a buzz to Coalville and offer an exciting customer experience.

"We can't wait for Newmarket to open and see the modern shopping and eating experience it's going to provide – if you'd like to come on this journey with us then now is the time to apply."

The current indoor market will stay open until the new one is ready to receive customers.

Its usual trading days are Tuesday 8am to 2pm, and Friday and Saturday 8am to 4pm, although these are currently reduced due to Covid-19 and the need for only essential stalls to operate.

All current traders have been offered support to apply for a space in Newmarket or to find suitable new premises in the town.

Anyone who would like to apply for a stall at Newmarket can do so online at www.nwleics.gov.uk/traders
