Armed police were called out to an address in Swannington on Monday evening after an incident which led to a man being arrested on suspicion of 'threats to commit arson with intent to endanger life'.

Police, Leicestershire Fire & Rescue Service and East Midlands Ambulance Service all attended the scene at Main Street in the village close to Coalville.

Residents living close to the property were evacuated as there was a smell of gas in the area.

As a result, a 44-year-old man was arrested and had been held in custody.

However, Leicestershire Police said today (Thursday) that, following enquiries, the man has been released with no further action in relation to threats to commit arson with intent to endanger life.

A spokesperson for Leicestershire Police said earlier in the week: "Shortly before 8pm yesterday (Monday 20 November), police were called to an address in Main Street, Swannington by the East Midlands Ambulance Service.

"Ambulance staff reported some concerns around the behaviour of the occupant and that there was a smell of gas coming from the address.

"In the interest of public and police safety, armed officers were deployed. Leicestershire Fire and Rescue Service also attended.

"A 44-year-old man was subsequently arrested on suspicion of making threats to commit arson with intent to endanger life.

"As a precaution, several neighbouring properties were safely evacuated for a short time.

"The occupants were taken to a safe place where welfare was provided.

"Those residents have since returned to their homes."
