The Holly Hayes Wood open day planned for this Saturday (July 24) has been cancelled due to the rising number of Covid cases in the Coalville area.

Organised by the Coalville Education Partnership, the day was to have gone ahead from 10am-2pm with a tour of the woodland one of the attractions on offer at the Whitwick beauty spot.

But a social media post this morning (Wednesday) from one of the organisers, Tony Smith, reads: "Following on from my recent post inviting readers to join us at our free open day at Holly Hayes Wood, I must now regretfully withdraw it.

"We have to postpone the event and all other activities for the time being due to rising COVID infections, in line with the District Council's decision to cancel their event.

"The Coalville area has the highest COVID infection rate in Leicestershire, per 100,000 population.

"Please everyone stay safe and we might be able to meet in a month or so."
