A family-run Coalville company says almost 30 jobs have been secured after it won a two-year contract to re-furbish all of the cast iron fascia on the North Bridge in Edinburgh.

Cast Iron Welding Services (CIWS) announced the deal today (Monday) and says it will be looking to increase staff to meet the demand.

The contract, which runs until 2023, secures 29 jobs which includes three apprenticeships.

CIWS has also worked on the Tower Bridge among previous work on iconic cast iron structures.

Managing director Peter Palmer told Coalville Nub News: "We have been awarded one of our most significant contracts to restore over 1,500 cast iron components for the North Bridge.

"Every component removed will come to Coalville to be completely restored before heading back to Edinburgh.

"This contract will help us continue to grow the apprenticeship scheme we have in place here."

Peter also explained the background behind the company - and the family connection.

He added: "CIWS was established back in 1946 by my grandfather - so I'm third generation of the business.

"Our main focus is undertaking repairs on large diesel engine components for power generation and shipping all over the world.

"This can be undertaken here in the UK or at our facility in Mexico .

"We also undertake various heritage projects and have restored many iconic cast iron structures across the UK, which include some major repairs for Tower Bridge in London."
