The Bard as a Botanist the 1620s House and Garden, Donington le Heath, near Coalville

Join us in the idyllic setting of our gardens for an intriguing talk on Shakespeare's relationship to Botany and a tour around our Gardens to discover the plants mentioned.

Michael Arkle, our very brilliant Garden Volunteer and Friend of the 1620s House and Garden will present his well researched and fascinating talk:

Passion, Poison and Politics are at the heart of how Shakespeare used plants as imagery in his poems and plays. The 'Passion' is conveyed through the strong expression of emotion displayed in his words, the politics is reflected in his profound interest in the colour of roses and political allegiance, and poison picks up the fact that the plot of three plays revolve around the use of lethal or mind-altering plant-based medication.

The barn will be open for Shakespearean themed refreshments.

Tickets are £6 per person, pre booking advised

This years marks the 400th anniversary of the publication of Shakespeare's first Folio in 1623. The first folio, which contained 36 of Shakespeare's plays is widely considered to be one of the most influential publications of all time.

At 1620s House and Garden, the 10th & 11th June will be our weekend of William to celebrate this, which includes this wonderful Talk and tour and Impromptu Shakespeare

On both days during open hours there will be costumed guides, tours of our period gardens with reference to the bard and a free Shakespeare Quiz to test your knowledge! Why not join the celebration and don your own ruff and breeches.
