Sir Chrisptopher Wren? In Leicestershire? Surely not! Yes my friend, the Sir John Moore Foundation is the only building to have been designed by Sir Christopher Wren in the Midlands (except for the library at Lincoln Cathedral. Does that count?) But recent research has started to suggest a woman might have helped him - Elizabeth Wilbrahim. We still have a lot to uncover.
The Museum at the Sir John Moore Foundation shows what life was like in 1891, with a classroom, a Headmaster's office, and a dormitory. It also explores the life of Sir John Moore, the village of Appleby Magna, and the history of this extraordinary building. Opened as a free school in 1697, it has served Appleby Magna as a free school ever since.
But it has also been a fee-paying school, home to the likes of a future England football player, several future MPs, and the grandchildren of Richard Arkwright. Come and explore the history of this fascinating site for free. Bring a picnic and eat it on the lawn! Then have a pint in our Cellar Bar, where the old school kitchens once were housed.
