UNTIL Thursday 3rd October
Join us for a free talk by Stuart Warburton of the Coalville Heritage Society titled 'George Smith:
The Children's Friend'. George Smith of Coalville is one of the most important social campaigners of the Victorian era. Born into a brick making family from Stoke-on-Trent he came to Coalville in 1859 to manage the Whitwick Colliery Brick and Tile Works, having left a similar position in Leicester. At Coalville he saw first hand the terrible working conditions of the 'brickyard children' and was motivated through social injustice and his religion to improve their lives.
As a result he steered through the Factory Act (Brick and Tiles Yard) Extension Bill but in the process was hated by brick makers around the country. This talk tells the story of a social philanthropist who few have heard of but he has an important place history.
The evening will begin at 6pm with a wine reception and a chance to view the new tile exhibition! The talk will start at 6.45pm, and finish by 8pm. Though the event is free, booking is essential. Book your place here: https://www.ticketsource.co.uk/charnwood-forest-geopark/t-qjpzrjl
