New contractors have been appointed to complete Coalville's indoor market scheme and work will resume this month.
The North West Leicestershire District Council project to transform the former Litten Tree Pub into a brand-new indoor space for traditional market stalls and a modern food court is now expected to be completed in early 2021.
Contractors, Crowngate, will begin working on Newmarket in Marlborough Square on Monday (October 19) to finish the remaining 40 per cent of building works.
Earlier this year, Westone Housing Ltd were forced to pull out of the contract due to the pressures Covid-19 placed on the day-to-day operation of the business Council seeking to appoint new contractor for Newmarket.
At the time work paused, North West Leicestershire District Council reaffirmed its commitment to have the work finished as soon as possible and - after a two-month procurement process - is now pleased to confirm work will resume.
The current indoor market will stay open until the new one is ready to receive customers.
Its trading days are Tuesday 8am to 2pm, and Friday and Saturday 8am to 4pm.
Councillor Richard Blunt, Leader of North West Leicestershire District Council, said: "It was disappointing for everyone when work paused in what has been a difficult year, but we're thrilled to be able to now move forward again with Newmarket.
"Newmarket is a key part of our regeneration plans for Coalville and the modern and vibrant space this will create is a real positive for the town.
"When it's ready to be opened, we will of course need to look at the Covid-19 situation and make sure we have the right measures in place to ensure a safe experience for shoppers and traders.
"Thank you for everyone's patience during the delay – that includes both the traders and the public eagerly waiting for the Newmarket. We're as keen as anyone to see the project completed and we can't wait to see it open in the new year.
"In the meantime, I'd encourage everyone to continue to support the current market and the traders that have been there for our communities through this pandemic."
