Whitwick Royal British Legion's 80th anniversary D-Day Service in Coalville features stories from local men

Whitwick Royal British Legion wlll be staging a D-Day 80th anniversary Commemoration Service in Coalville on Sunday.

The service, at Memorial Square in Coalville, will feature stories of local men who took part in the D Day Landings.

In April, Whitwick RBL made an appeal for anyone whose relative played a part in the D-Day Landings in 1944.

Part of the ceremony will be to include descendants, as well as surviving soldiers, of those who were involved in the operation which was to signal the 'beginning of the end' of World War II on June 6.

The local men featured in Sunday's service are Fred Bonser (Royal Navy Commando), Jack Smith (Royal Marines), Leonard Tudge (Army), Frank Hares (Royal Air Force).

HM Lord Lieutenant Michael Kapur OBE will also be attending the ceremony next to the Clock Tower.

The timings for the day will be:

• 09:30hrs – Coalville Memorial Square Clocktower. D-Day Commemoration Service, gathering begins

• 09:45hrs – Form Up rear of Coalville Library for those wishing to march

• 10:00hrs – Parade Begins

• 10:15hrs – Service Begins

• 10:50hrs – Service Ends

• 11:00hrs – Refreshments, Snibstone New Inn.

Before that tomorrow (Thursday), Whitwick RBL will be marking the June 6 D-Day anniversary.

The timetable for that is:

• 08:00hrs – Whitwick St Johns the Baptist Church Memorial. D-Day Proclamation

• 08:00hrs – Coalville Memorial Square Clocktower. D-Day Proclamation

• 14:00hrs – National Memorial Arboretum

• 19:30hrs – 21:45hrs

• Church Service Whitwick St Johns the Baptist, Wreath Laying, Torch Light parade, Beacon Lighting

The Proclamation and beacon lighting is an international event, taking place in the Allied countries who took part on the day, Australia, America, New Zealand, Canada, France, Belgium, all carrying out these acts at their local times.
