VE Day 75: Coalville Is Determined To Mark Anniversary Despite Coronavirus Lockdown
North West Leicestershire District Council has given more details about now the 75th anniversary of VE Day will be celebrated in Coalville.
Friday marks the 75th anniversary of Victory in Europe Day and with events across the district sadly cancelled, the district council has worked with partners to ensure the celebrations and commemorations can continue safely at home.
With the support of Coalville Heritage Society, three historical panels, that were due to be on display at the VE Day in event in Coalville, have still been produced by the district council and published online.
They feature historic pictures of VE and VJ (Victory in Japan) celebrations in Coalville in the years after the Second World War.
Meanwhile the Rev Gill Pinnington of Christ Church in Coalville, has made it possible for us all to enjoy a special VE Day service from our homes by pre-recording the service onto Youtube.
Along with the historical panels this is available to watch at NW Leics VE Day 75
Through the website, families can also find links to a home decorating toolkit including bunting, posters and colouring templates for children.
Councillor Tony Gillard, Portfolio Holder for Business and Regeneration at North West Leicestershire District Council, said: "We're determined that, despite not being able to hold our tea party in the park, people in North West Leicestershire will still be able to celebrate and commemorate VE day from the safety of their homes.
"With the support of Rev Pinnington and Coalville Heritage Society, we've been able to ensure people can still reflect upon the sacrifices made during the Second World War and be reminded of exactly why we celebrate VE Day."
Steve Duckworth, Chairman of the Coalville Heritage Society added: "VE Day and VJ Day are hugely important days of commemoration and the society has a few photographs of local street parties taken by Mr. Stacey, a local photographer in the 1940s – 1960s.
"We thoroughly enjoyed working with North West Leicestershire District Council to put together the historical panels.
"It's a real shame we can't have them on display, but we hope people will take the time to head online to enjoy them."
