A murder investigation has begun after a man was found with 'serious head injuries' in Hugglescote in the early hours of this morning (Friday, February 24).

Leicestershire Police say that shortly after 2am, a report was received stating a woman was being attacked in a park off Ashburton Road, close to Hugglescote Primary School.

Officers attended and, after searching the area, found a man and a woman who were both unresponsive.

The man had suffered serious injuries and the East Midlands Ambulance Service was called.

However, the man was pronounced dead shortly after 3am.

Forensics were still working at the scene around lunchtime on Friday

A woman – aged 23 – and a 29-year-old man who was located by officers nearby, were subsequently arrested on suspicion of murder.

Leicestershire Police said this evening (Friday) that the woman has since been released with no further action taken - but the man remains in police custody.

An investigation, led by detectives from the East Midlands Special Operations Unit (EMSOU) is continuing.

A scene preservation is in place in the park, close to where the man and woman were found.

The school is currently on half-term meaning it is currently closed while the incident is being investigated.

Detective Inspector Mark Parish, the senior investigating officer, said: "While two people have been arrested in connection with this incident, our investigation is very much in its early stages and I would like to speak to anyone who saw or heard anything in the park or in Ashburton Road.

"Did you see anyone going into the park?

The area around the park was taped off by police

"I'm particularly keen to speak to residents with CCTV or doorbell cameras at their property or anyone who happened to be driving in the area at the time.

"Any information you're able to provide, no matter how insignificant you think it is, could help."
