Two new Coalville area locations have been added to the list of spots where speeding is a concern and will be monitored by mobile cameras.

A number of new roads in Leicestershire are set to be patrolled to catch people speeding.

These are known as 'community concern sites' and are dotted around Leicester, Leicestershire and Rutland. Leicester, Leicestershire and Rutland Road Safety Partnership – made up of Leicestershire Police, Leicester City Council, Leicestershire County Council, Rutland County Council and National Highways – identify these sites if there has been history of speeding, an increased number of casualties or residents raising concern.

The two areas highlighted in and around Ashby are:

• Church Lane, Ravenstone

• Grange Road, Hugglescote

This adds to the locations identified in June and reported HERE.

Speeding offence prosecutions shot up in Leicestershire last year, with the figure jumping from 2,524 in 2021 to 4,855 in 2022.

This 92 per cent rise was the third highest increase nationally, with neighbouring Nottinghamshire seeing the biggest increase of 131 per cent.

Jonathan Clarkson of the Leicester, Leicestershire and Rutland Road Safety Partnership, said: "Local residents are encouraged to contact us if they think they have a problem with excessive speeding in their communities.

"This helps us identify those locations which will then be subject to a covert speed survey and if they meet our criteria they will qualify for mobile speed enforcement."

There are a variety of cameras which patrol the local roads and community concern sites are monitored by mobile speed cameras. In June, the local police force added a new speed camera van to its fleet of vehicles which is fitted with a 360 degree infrared camera.

This allows officers to better identify offending motorcycles and monitor vehicles during darker evenings. It also has a four-wheel drive capability so it can access roadsides in rough terrain and bad weather.

If caught speeding, people can face a minimum penalty of a £100 fine and three points added to their licence. This can be appealed but could lead to a date in court where more penalty points can be added and an increased fine imposed of up to £1,000.
