TOMMY Lampposts have been making an appearance in Whitwick over the past few days.

With the Royal British Legion's Poppy Appeal launching this weekend, the village is doing its bit to raise its profile ahead of Remembrance Sunday next month.

Since taking over the organising of the Remembrance Day parade, Whitwick Parish Council has this year increased the awareness scheme by including Tommies on Lampposts along with the existing poppies.

The move has been sponsored by North West Leicestershire district councillors Anthony Barker (Hermitage) and Peter Moult (Thornborough) in their wards - which has enabled the scheme to be extended.

The councillors said that the funding goes directly to the Royal British Legion, and it is designed to support veterans - but, critically, not forgetting all those that paid the ultimate sacrifice.

It is planned to extend the scheme to include other parts of the village in future years.
