Thringstone residents angry that village's remembrance lane is being targeted by vandals on a regular basis

Thringstone residents are angry that a lane dedicated to the memory of villagers who have passed away is being vandalised on a regular basis.

Drury Lane is maintained and looked after by the village's community group the Friends of Thringstone.

It is a footpath by the side of Thringstone Co-op and the group say damage is being caused on a daily basis.

In the last month, several boulders from the wall that forms the boundary of the Co-op have been pulled away and left in the lane.

More recently - over the past month - the group say their planting has also been vandalised.

Bushes and trees have been pulled up - these are funded and planted by village residents as a community group.

Nita Pearson, of the Friends of Thringstone, said: "The heads have been pulled off flowers and plants, and generally left a mess.

"The police are aware and have been stepping up their visits to the area, and have spoken to kids down there.

"They maintain it isn't them, which is fine, but someone is doing this, and others may know who these others are.

"This community planting, and the bench we provided down there for people, is in remembrance of people in the village who have died.

"We are absolutely heartbroken to go down there on a daily basis and discover more of our hard work has been vandalised.

"We would welcome any information on this directly, or through the police, as to who the culprits are, and that this stops."

Last Friday, a group who had congregated in the lane are reported to have thrown cans, bottles and stones over the wall into the Community Centre garden where children from the pre-school were sitting, waiting for their parents to pick them up.

Nita added: "On talking about this with the centre team, I understand that, a couple of weeks ago, some youths went into the class at the back of the Charles Booth community centre, which can be accessed from the lane, and started a fire which also destroyed some of the pre-school equipment."

Friends of Thringstone litter pick, plant trees and shrubs and flowers and maintain five flower beds, clean graffiti and inform people what is going on in the village
