North West Leicestershire District Council has revealed it has invested nearly £100,000 in CCTV - leading to an increase of 10 times when it comes to monitored incidents.

The council says the commitment has led to notable improvements in public safety and crime prevention.

NWLDC says it has invested £93,000 on:

  • Moving into a new state-of-the-art CCTV control room
  • Replacing analogue cameras with digital HD cameras
  • New camera locations in both Ashby and Coalville
  • Improved communication between the control room and retailers as well as pubs using radios.

In the past 18 months, monitored incidents have increased from 30 a month to 300 a month thanks to these new systems.

On top of this, the council adds that, in more than 50 per cent of cases, the CCTV system has adequately captured the incidents.

Next steps in the council's CCTV improvement plans include new systems in Castle Donington.

Councillor Michael Wyatt, Chair of the Safer North West Leicestershire Community Safety Partnership, said: "We remain committed to creating safer communities and this investment is a big step in the right direction.

"These recent improvements emphasise our dedication to ensure the safety of all local businesses and residents in the district.

"This investment has already led to many positive outcomes and I expect there to be many more to come."
