Christmas in Coalville was hailed as a success - despite Storm Bert threatening the event last weekend.

The day had to be curtailed - but North West Leicestershire District Council said the town's 'spirit' meant that many planned events went ahead.

A newly-refurbished Marlborough Square was intended to be at the centre of the festive occasion.

But strong winds in the morning meant that the stage for live music could not be put up.

However, there was praise for not cancelling the event completely, as had happened in some other towns, due to the storm.

Councillor Tony Gillard, Portfolio Holder for Business at NWLDC, said: "Christmas in Coalville was a success, again and I'd like to thank everyone – all the visitors, traders, entertainers – for making it such a special event.

"Despite Storm Bert's unwanted presence, the day was still full of entertainment and people were thoroughly enjoying themselves. It was great to see that Coalville spirit pushing through, even though the weather wasn't what we hoped for.

"Thank you to everyone who supported the event and to everyone who attended, it could not have been as successful without you!"

The council also highlighted the positives to come from the day on social media.

It said: "Despite the wind and rain, and numerous other events cancelled across the country plus negative comments and coverage from various places, Christmas in Coalville went ahead on Saturday with a few last-minute alterations.

"People came and enjoyed the day, the stallholders that braved the weather reported very good trade - with a number of stalls having to restock throughout the day.

"Coalville Public Radio used the event to launch the new station, a local dance group wowed the crowds, our smaller stage provided entertainment and music throughout the day.

"Our street performers certainly lifted spirits: The National Elf Service prescribed smiles to all that they entertained, and our enchanting Snow Globe delighted the crowds.

"And so to the 'hi-vis army' of council staff from different teams. Their resilience, quick thinking, determination and 'can do' attitude made it all possible and made us very proud.

"Our staff certainly went over and above, and the kind words of thanks from the stallholders, retailers and people of Coalville that supported the event mean so much to them."
