Some Coalville residents will be asked to go to the polls next month to vote in two elections.

On May 2, there will be a by-election for the vacant Snibston South seat on North West Leicestershire District Council.

The candidates are Catherine Beck (Labour), Paul Holliday (Liberal Democrat), Dan Roberts (Independent) and Greg Simpson (Green).

The by-election follows the resignation of Councillor June Page.

There will also be county wide elections to elect a Leicestershire Police and Crime Commissioner.

Rupert Matthews, currently in the post, is standing for re-election.

The other candidates are Fizza Askari (One Leicester), Aasiya Bora (Green), Rory Palmer (Labour and Co-operative) and Ian Sharpe (Liberal Democrats).

For the first time in their history, the PCC elections will use the first past the post voting method.

Each local authority will count its own votes and provide its figures to Leicester City Council.

Once all the results are collated, it will be declared who is elected as police and crime commissioner for Leicester, Leicestershire and Rutland.

Under the Police Reform and Social Responsibility Act 2011, the PCC must produce a Police and Crime Plan which sets out the Commissioner's strategic police and crime objective for Leicester, Leicestershire and Rutland.

• Voters are urged to remember that they must be registered to vote and bring a valid form of ID with them on the day.
