One of the key campaigners in bringing a children's play area to Coalville Park is stepping down from the organisation that made it possible.

Sandra Ramp was a member local volunteer group, The Friends of Coalville Park which opened the play area around a year ago.

A toddler area, balance trail, swings, zip line and a wheelchair accessible roundabout for children with disabilities was among the new equipment.

An information board about the history of the park has also been installed and a strong mining theme features throughout the new design.

The Friends of Coalville Park group, which is behind the redesign, worked with North West Leicestershire District Council (NWLDC) and Veolia to fund the £73,000 project.

It took two years of hard work which started when Coalville mums Sandra and Amy Shepherd joined forces with the single aim of making the play area better.

But now Sandra is stepping down and she posted a message on social media: "Helping to create the play area in Coalville Park has honestly been one of my proudest achievements to date - and even now, almost one year on, I still can't believe we did it!

"We made such a massive difference to the park and the area and I hope my own children will be inspired as they grow to also volunteer and make a difference to their local area.

"Sadly, I have decided that now is the time for me to move on, spend more time on my family, health and business and after - I think almost four years - resign from Friends of Coalville Park.

"I may still keep in touch and drop in on the occasional meeting as an ordinary member but for now I leave the social media and admin side of things in the capable hands of Kate & Ella.

"If anyone is looking for a voluntary position as treasurer of a small community group please get in touch, I know they'd love to hear from you."
