There has been an increase in purse thefts from elderly women in Coalville town centre, say North West Leicestershire Police.

A warning has been issued by the force following a rise in incidents in the Belvoir Shopping Centre.

Police are issuing advice about carrying sums of money in public areas in the town.

A social media post from North West Leicestershire Police says: "We are aware of an increase in purse thefts in Belvoir Shopping Centre where elderly females are being targeted.

"Police are currently out on patrol around Coalville town centre giving advice to the elderly and making the shops and banks aware of what is going on.

"Purse bells are available to collect from the Police front enquiry desk in the Belvoir Shopping Centre.

"Officers are urging people to share this information with elderly relatives and friends, who might not see this online or on social media.

"Be vigilant when using the cash points and banks.

"Secure your money before leaving banks and shops or when walking away from a cash point. Be mindful of being followed.

"Don't hang your bag on the back of a shopping trolley and don't leave your purse inside of your trolley.

"If you are using a mobility scooter, do not leave your bag in the front basket.

"KEEP YOUR PURSE IN YOUR BAG AND YOUR BAG ON YOUR PERSON AT ALL TIMES."
