A fire at a disused building in Coalville on Sunday morning is believed to have been started deliberately.

Four sets of fire crews were called to the blaze in the Wolsey Road and Baker Street area - with a plume of smoke visible around the town.

Leicestershire Police even warned drivers about poor visibility along Mantle Lane and the A511 as smoke billowed from the fire - with some roads closed.

Once the fire had been brought under control, the incident became a police matter.

A spokesperson for Leicestershire Police said: "Officers on duty in the Wolsey Road area of Coalville, around 11.45am yesterday (Sunday, November 24) came across a fire in a disused building.

"Leicestershire Fire and Rescue Service attended the scene and local road closures were put in place.

"No one was reported to have been injured.

"Following an investigation the fire is believed to have been started deliberately.

"The force is liaising with other agencies to ensure the building is secured as it's been deemed unsafe. People are encouraged not to enter the site for safety reasons."

A spokesperson for Leicestershire Fire & Rescue Service added: "Crews from Coalville, Ashby, Birstall and Shepshed Fire Stations were called out to a blaze at a derelict property on Baker Street in Coalville at 11:53am yesterday (Sunday, November 24).

"The fire was located on the ground floor and was tackled by crews using one hose reel jet, thermal image camera and four breathing apparatus.

"It was brought under control and time of stop was 14:23. There were no casualties."

.

On Sunday, Leicestershire Police posted on social media that smoke from the blaze could affect motorists' visibility.

The post read: "Please be aware that there is a large amount of smoke across the A511 from Mantle Road which may affect visibility. Emergency services are in attendance."

A later update said: "Visibility is now much improved. Thank you for your caution and patience."
