Plans to convert Hugglescote chapel into flats get the green light from District Council
Plans to build new flats on the site of a former chapel in Hugglescote have been given the go-ahead by North West Leicestershire District Council.
The building on Station Road had been used as an outlet for carpet sales until recently under the name of I.C. Discounts.
But now permission has been granted for a building designed to accommodate five one-bedroom residential flats which will be three storeys in height.
Parking facilities are proposed to the front and rear of the site and within the building, with access via the existing access point on Station Road.
The application was made by a Mr Wilson, of I and M Rentals Limited, and was made in August of last year.
Now, District Council planners have given the green light for the proposed development.
A council officer's report says: "The Local Plan directs new residential development to sustainable settlements that can support growth in a sustainable manner.
"Hugglescote is classified as a sustainable location within the settlement hierarchy, having access to local services, public transport links, and nearby employment opportunities.
"As such, the principle of residential development in this location is considered acceptable in line provided the development is of a scale and design that is in keeping with the settlement's character.
"The Hugglescote and Donington le Heath Neighbourhood Plan also supports new residential development that contributes to meeting local housing needs, particularly where it is well designed and respects the character of the area."
A design and access statement, accompanying the application, says: "The proposed building, whilst slightly taller than the one existing, will incorporate a strong gabled design with feature brickwork, first-floor feature entrance, front steps and parapet wall to the gables to emulate the character of the existing building and it is proposed to incorporate the original commemorative foundation stones in the new build. A two-bay car parking facility occupies the undercroft level.
"The design reflects the character of the former chapel that currently occupies the site.
"The development does not harm the visual amenity or local character of the area or the amenity of nearby occupiers. The site is accessible to public transport and provides a level of car parking reflecting its sustainable location, together with cycle parking provision. The existing vehicular access serves the development and visiting vehicles can enter and leave in a forward gear to maximise highway safety."
