Councillor Michael Wyatt has announced he intends to make sure Coalville Park's 125th anniversary is recognised next year.

The park has provided a public outdoor space for almost a century and quarter.

Now North West Leicestershire District Council is putting plans in place to make sure the town marks the milestone.

Cllr Wyatt said: "I am already in talks with officers, councillors and members of the public about what we want to do next year to celebrate the park's 125th year.

"I am hoping that we will be able to put several events on at the park.

"The events we are looking at will involve the whole community so we can come together to celebrate this much-loved park which we are very lucky to have in the heart of Coalville.

"If anyone would like to contact me about any ideas they would like the council to consider I would be happy to consider them."

The park was created on land owned by the Coalville Athletic Club in 1896 and formally opened on March 8, 1899.

This is commemorated by an inscription on the obelisk located in the centre of the park.

It was developed in the Victorian style and still largely retains the original layout of paths and driveways with shrubberies to the outer edges and lawns and flower beds to the centre.
