Plans to refurbish the Grade II listed Old House on the Castle Rock School site have been submitted to North West Leicestershire District Council.

The application has been made by the Leicester-based Lionheart Educational Trust which includes the Coalville school on Meadow Road.

In the application, the Trust says that: 'The aim of the proposed refurbishment scheme is to preserve and, in some cases, reinstate the historical features.

"The results being the preservation of the architectural and historical significance of the building, which is testament to the design and workmanship of the original builders."

The building, known as the The Old House Conference Centre, is thought to date back to the mid-1800s.

A Heritage Statement accompanying the application fot the extensive work, says: "YMD Boon Ltd has been instructed to undertake an assessment of the significance of the building known as The Old House in Coalville.

"This assessment will accompany the listed building consent application for internal and external alterations to the building.

"The main objective of the assessment is to better understand the buildings and its context within the surrounding area, which will help to establish its significance.

"This statement will include an assessment on how the proposed works will impact the significance of the building and its setting.

"The Old House lies within the grounds of the Castle Rock School, which is a large secondary school of more than 1,100 pupils.

"It was last used as a Conference Centre, which was available to rent for meeting, training and conferences.

"The school has used the building as a temporary classroom space on an ad hoc basis. The building is currently unoccupied awaiting restoration and refurbishment."

In the statement, the work carried out will be on roof coverings, a stone arch and door, bay and dormer windows, rooflights, external doors, timber beams, plastering and floor tiling among other planned improvements.
