A driver who caused a serious collision in Coalville last summer has been disqualified from driving after a hearing at Leicester Crown Court yesterday (Wednesday).

Phillip Blankley, 20, of James Street, Anstey, pleaded guilty at an earlier hearing to causing serious injury by dangerous driving.

He was sentenced to 20 months detention suspended for two years and disqualified from driving for 12 months. He was also ordered to take an extended retest after this period.

He was also charged with driving while unfit through drugs but that offence was dismissed at court.

The conviction relates to an incident in July last year when Blankley was driving his VW Lupo at speed along Greenhill Road.

The vehicle lost control, hit the kerb and damaged some fencing and lamppost before coming to rest on its roof.

Two of the three passengers in the car sustained serious injuries and the third sustained minor injuries.

PC Paul Baker was the investigating officer, he said: "It was pure luck that no lives were lost in this incident.

"An examination of the CCTV confirmed Blankley was driving at speeds in excess of 90mph.

"Two of his friends sustained fractured bones and thankfully have now made a full recovery.

"Speeding is one of the four main contributors to serious injury and road death collisions. There is no excuse for speeding, putting your own life and the lives of other road users at risk.

"We hope this conviction deters others and reassures the wider community that we do take these reports seriously."
