Almost half of North West Leicestershire voters questioned in a new poll now think Britain was wrong to vote for Brexit almost seven years ago.

According to Yahoo News, the survey, conducted by opinion website UnHerd, asked 10,000 people across constituencies in England, Scotland and Wales a series of questions, covering subjects including Brexit, politics, gender ideology, immigration, housing, the monarchy and the cost of living crisis.

The polling estimates that, nearly seven years on from the 2016 referendum result, there are only three constituencies where more people agree with the statement "Britain was wrong to leave the EU" than don't.

In North West Leicestershire, 49 per cent of those quizzed say that they either 'strongly agree' or 'mildly agree' that the UK was wrong to leave the European Union.

A total of 33 per cent supported the Brexit vote, while 17 per cent neither agreed or disagreed.

That makes it the 487th most supportive of the 632 constituencies.

Nationally, 54 per cent of those questioned agreed that Britain should have stayed in the EU - compared with 19 per cent who strongly disagreed.

The three constituencies that still supported Brexit and maintained it was the right decision, are all in Lincolnshire and currently have a sitting Conservative MP.

In 2016, North West Leicestershire returned a 61 per vote in favour of leaving the EU.

Andrew Bridgen - then a Conservative MP - led a 'Leave' campaign in the area and was even helped by a visit from Boris Johnson who made an appearance in Ashby's Market Street.

This week marks the third anniversary of Brexit, the UK having left the EU officially on January 31, 2020.

The survey uses a form of statistical modelling called multilevel regression with post-stratification (MRP) to pull out likely patterns of opinion across the country.

The polling shows that in the constituency of Boston and Skegness, 41 per cent disagree that Britain was wrong to leave the EU, compared to 37 per cent who agree.

In neighbouring South Holland and The Deepings, and in Louth and Horncastle, opinion is split equally at 40 per cent and 41 per cent respectively.

In the remaining 629 constituencies in England, Scotland and Wales, more people now think Britain was wrong to leave the EU than those who remain happy with the outcome.

According to the survey, the "most Bregretful" area is the Labour constituency of Bristol West, with 69 per cent of people there agreeing that Britain was wrong to leave the EU, compared to 13 per cent who thought it was the right decision.

Brexit remains a hot political talking point with both Labour and the Conservatives grappling with the issue.
