A local councillor has moved to clarify comments he made about the closure of Coalville's branch of Poundland last week.

The Belvoir Shopping Centre branch of the cut price store is to shut in the new year.

Shortly after the company confirmed its decision, Cllr Elliott Allman posted on his public council Facebook page that he felt the closure would not be a blow to the town centre as there were other similar outlets in Coalville.

But remarks made about Poundland as a company prompted managing director Barry Williams, to write to Cllr Allman to respond to the comments.

Cllr Allman, representing the Snibston North ward, has gone into more detail on his Facebook page to explain his social media post.

He said: "What I mean is this is an opportunity.

"An opportunity for a local business and for local people to get their foot in the door at a real estate plot which is in a good position in the town. Very ideally situated.

"Wouldn't it be better for money and revenue to go to a business owner who is local to the area than to Poundland?

"I'm not saying it can't be another business similar to the one of Poundland's model.

"What I'm saying is this should be seen as an opportunity. Poundland did not close due to lack of business. It closed due to the lease running out.

"With Coalville currently going through redevelopment, would it not be nice to get something else?

"We already have a B&M, a Boyes, Home Bargains, Wilkinsons, all very similar shops.

"I think it's a real opportunity for something else to come to the town.

"I hope that clears a few things up."
