North West Leicestershire's Labour election candidate Amanda Hack joined MP Darren Jones to support the district's banks and building societies.

They visited Nationwide in Coalville which has been at its current site since 1962.

It was opened as part of the New Broadway Shopping Centre - now the Belvoir Shopping Centre.

Branch manager Helen Cross welcomed Leicestershire County Councillor Hack and Mr Jones, the Shadow Chief Secretary to the Treasury, to Nationwide.

Cllr Hack said: "We wanted to find out about what was happening in the local constituency with regards to banking, banking services has been affecting them.

"It's really great to come to Nationwide, who've promised to keep their branches open, and they will be remaining in Coalville for the next few years.

"I think that's really important, local people really value that because branches have been closed and banks have been closing in Northwest Leicestershire.

"This seems to be a well used branch, and it's good for the community

"Their commitment has meant that people switch their accounts. Because they can be on the main street.

"Making the commitment in their communities has made a difference for their business."

Mr Jones said the Labour Party was targeting this constituency where MP Andrew Bridgen currently stands as an Independent candidate.

He said: "North West Leicestershire is a priority constituency for us - and we want to make sure that people can see that they've got a great candidate to vote for in this election.

"We've got a proud history and a proud heritage of Labour representation here. We want to go back to that this election.

"We think we have every chance of doing that. Mr. Bridgen's, politics are what they are. I think local people can see they can get stability, and a strong community representative.

"It's great to see Nationwide staying open on the high street here, but many of the banks are not, that's why we've announced nationally that we are going to open up banking hubs across communities across the whole country by getting the other banks that have decided to close the branches, to cough up a bit of money to provide access to banking services."
