An exciting new creative hub is throwing open its doors with a bang on Friday and Saturday, when the public is invited to drop in and see what a Coalville community group has created.

Coalville C.A.N. (Communities and Neighbours) has taken over a central building in town, which has been refurbished.

And it has pride of place overlooking the clock tower.

Deana Wildgoose, CAN Connector, explained how it works: "We are a community cooperative.

"And we are aiming to work alongside the people of Coalville to unlock creativity.

"This is by collaborating with artists, writers and makers and to make visible what is sometimes invisible to outsiders – a great community."

The open weekend gives everyone a chance to see how CAN is helping to re-generate the area.

That is being done with the support of community grants and business partnerships.

Workshops, opportunities and exhibitions will be on the future agenda.

Along with collaborative projects with local organisations and businesses.

There is also a set of offices for rent, meeting rooms, work spaces and hot desking available now.

During part of the special open days, the public are invited to join Jon Alexander, on his book tour.

He will be signing copies of his books and taking part in conversation on Friday evening (May 20) at 5pm.

Visitors to the open days will see an exhibition in The Gallery.

This will be showing work by local artists, poets and makers, entitled 'Upcycle Your Thinking.'

Deana added: "It's an exciting time for our town and district.

"Our aim is to create a place where the community can collaborate and take part in making a positive difference.

"We are committed to get buildings into the hands of local people and this is just the first.

"Coalville CAN believes that everyone of any age can contribute and all skills and talents are welcome."

The open days are this Friday and Saturday (May 20 and 21) from 10am – 4pm, with the author's special evening on Friday at 5pm.
