Coalville's Christmas lights will be switched on before the end of the month - but there will be no official event to mark the occasion.

North West Leicestershire District Council has confirmed that it will be shining a festive light on the town from 4pm on Saturday, November 28.

But coronavirus restrictions mean that there can be no 'switch on' event.

However, the council says it is important to bring lights to Coalville after what has been a difficult year.

But the council makes it clear it is looking closely at Government guidance in the coming weeks as lockdown ends to see if any festive activities can be organised in December to support local businesses and town centres.

Paul Sanders, Head of Community Services at North West Leicestershire District Council, said: "There will be no event for the Christmas lights switch on in Coalville this year, but decorative lights will still be installed in the town centre and illuminated from 4pm on Saturday 28 November.

"It is important that residents in the area continue to follow the national guidance to stay at home, and only travel where it is essential.

"Once lockdown restrictions have been lifted and when it is safe to do so, we will look to arrange some festive activities to support local businesses and help our residents celebrate Christmas."
