A former Coalville councillor says he has resigned his membership of the North West Leicestershire Conservative group and National Party - in a highly critical social media post.

Elliott Allman was a Conservative councillor for Snibston North until last year's local government elections.

He also publicly supported the North West Leicestershire candidate at the General Election, Craig Smith.

But now Mr Allman says his wish to 'help steer the Tory vessel in the right direction' has been met 'by captains of the ship being closed books'.

He also criticises the Conservative party leadership race, which initially had six contenders, saying the local Tory group backed Priti Patel as the next leader.

But it is understood that, although she spoke to members in Coalville on Friday, this was not an endorsement and all six candidates have been invited to North West Leicestershire.

Mr Allman's post reads: "Yesterday, I resigned my Membership to the Local Conservative group and National Party.

"I have been a member for most of my adult life, I have stood as a district councillor several times and have supported the party through hard and good times.

"I remain a true Conservative. With Conservative values. Something which I feel our local group and national party are lacking in.

"I would have liked the opportunity to help steer the Tory vessel in the right direction. Thinking I can help from within the party. However the opportunity hasn't been forthcoming. With captains of the ship being closed books. Unable to handle feedback and criticism, or to even listen to it.

"Surrounding themselves with yes men who will just support a losing campaign being an easier option for them. Which will only mean one thing. More losing.

"Whilst the local Conservative group steer off course I will be supporting other conservative groups throughout the district.

"The national party are in trouble. Six potential candidates have but themselves forward. None of which are good enough.

"I have several really exciting and promising options moving forward. I am going to be considering these options over the next few weeks.

"I have several friends within the local Tory group still. I wish you all the best in what is very challenging times for all."

North West Leicestershire Conservative Party was approached by Coalville Nub News for a response to Mr Allman's comments.

A spokesperson said: "Elliott Allman was previously a regular member of the party but has now decided to resign his membership for the second time in five years.

"It is not the place of myself or any other association officer to comment on any personal matters Mr Allman may have. Both nationally and locally, the Conservative Party is a welcoming and inclusive organisation, as shown by the significant increase in new memberships we've seen in the past few months here in North West Leicestershire."
