A man in his 80s has been taken to hospital with 'serious injuries' following three-car collision at a busy Coalville junction today (Monday).

Emergency services were called to Stephenson Road - the A511 - where it meets Broom Leys Road just after 10.30 am.

The elderly man was the driver of one of the vehicles.

Police remained at the scene for rest of the afternoon and a Collision Investigation Unit was called in by police.

Roads were cordoned off in the area for over seven hours.

Broom Leys Road was closed in both directions around the junction, and traffic was diverted away from the A511 causing long tailbacks.

A spokesperson for Leicestershire Police said: "Emergency services are currently dealing with a three-car collision in Coalville.

"Police were called to the scene at the junction of Broom Leys Road and Stephenson Road, shortly after 10.30am today (Monday 10 July).

"The driver of one of the cars – a man in his 80s – has been taken to hospital with serious injuries.

"The road currently remains closed."

A spokesperson for Leicestershire Fire & Rescue confirmed that a driver had to be cut from one of the vehicles.

The fire service added: "We received a call from East Midlands Ambulance Service reporting Road Traffic Collision involving three cars and one person complaining of neck pain, on Broom Leys Avenue, Coalville.

"After liaison with EMAS, extrication took place, and the casualty was left in their care. Crews from Coalville attended."

Police later posted an update on social media which reads: "The roads surrounding the crossroads of Stephenson Road and Broom Leys Road will continue to be closed for a number of hours - please find alternate routes."

The roads were re-opened shortly after 6pm.
