Plans for a new dog day-care building, dog wash and hydrotherapy unit in Coalville have been given the go-ahead.

An application for the scheme was made by Adele Moore, of Dogtastic Daycare, in Broom Leys Road - which has been described as 'an exemplary start up business'.

A planning statement issued alongside the application gives background into the business which has been operating from Broom Leys Farm for over two years.

The statement says: "The applicants were originally assisted in setting up the business by North West Leicestershire business team and, in October 2020, the site was opened by Andrew Bridgen MP as an exemplary start up business.

"The business is achieving its goal of employing six members of staff in the first two years, in addition to employing a dog walker on top of this.

"As the dog numbers increase so will the number of staff, with one member of staff per eight dogs.

"At full capacity the new puppy centre will lead to an additional six members of staff.

"It is important for the business to remain at Broom Leys Farm as they have built up their existing clientele in the area and being forced to move to larger premises will result in starting again.

"The newly proposed building will allow to separate puppies and adult dogs, and it is proposed that the new building would also have the capacity of holding 40 dogs.

"Currently, the applicants are receiving around 20 new enquiries for places per week.

"Enquiries for places for new dogs are vetted and if taken on slowly introduced to the group.

"On granting of consent, the works for the puppy centre and dog wash unit would start as soon as possible.

"However, the dog hydrotherapy unit would be on a 3–5-year timeframe, based on the continuing development of the dog day care business.

"The hydrotherapy unit would though provide facilities not available within a 30-mile radius of the site, allowing for dogs with hip dysplasia, operation recovery, etc. to receive treatment within the local area.

"Local residents who have ill dogs will not have to travel as significant distances.

"This would operate on booking system, with people provided time slots for arrival.

"This would also lead to the creation of 1-2 additional jobs. The dog wash unit though is to only be used by existing customers already utilising the dog day-care facility."

It also included a retrospective application for an extension to existing outdoor area which was required as separate outdoor areas were needed for the dogs to toilet in.

The planning statement says this is because adultescent male dogs cannot be in the same area as females or adult males.

Dogs are kept in separate groups at all times when inside.

The statement also says the applicants work with dogs with issues with fear and reactivity, and these dogs also need to be kept separately, with one member of staff per dog until they are more confident.
