The price for having large items like fridges, cookers and mattresses collected from your home has been reduced by North West Leicestershire District Council (NWLDC).

Starting on April 1, the council has reduced the cost to £25 - from £28 - for up to three items to help households to dispose of trickier items in a legal, safe and affordable way.

Councillor Michael Wyatt, NWLDC Portfolio Holder for Community and Climate Change, said: "We want to make it as easy as possible for people to get rid of unwanted household items, so our bulky waste collection is being reduced in price.

"It's the easiest, safest and, importantly, legal way of getting rid of things like fridges and freezers, and other large items. 

"Unfortunately, there are people who offer to pick up people's waste and then dump it in the lanes and fields of our district.

"This is fly-tipping and it's a blight on our environment.

"I would like to warn residents not to pay these people to remove items for you.

"If the waste can be tracked back to you, you could face a fine as well as the person who dumped it."
